Next week the leaders of the Linux industry gather in Austin Texas for a meeting of the minds. The Linux Foundation has set up an invitational event where the folks who work directly on the business and technical issues facing the platform can get together and share ideas. We’ll find out about these questions and more:

What are the technology trends and the economics driving the Linux desktop in new low cost PC’s? Find out directly from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Shuttle, Everex, Intel, TI, AMD, and more.

What is the “M” commitment to the “L” in LAMP after the Sun acquisition of MySQL? Find out from the Marten Mikos himself.

When am I going to get my hands on a Linux phone? Find out from Google’s OHA, the LiMo Foundation, OpenMoko, and others. This is the first time Google and the LiMo foundation are sharing a stage and should be an interesting talk on where they see common ground in Linux.

Where is Red Hat Linux headed?
Find out from the CTO of Red Hat Brian Stephens.

What is IBM’s Linux strategy? Meet Dan Frye, head of IBM’s Linux Technology Center, Inna Kuznetsova, Director of IBM Linux Strategy, Jeff Smith, Vice President IBM Software group.

What is FOSSBazaar?
Find out about a new community site dedicated to open source legal and governance issues. This Linux Foundation workgroup will be meeting in Austin.

What is a “Mobile Internet Device” and how is it running Linux?
Meet the folks from Intel’s Moblin effort, Nokia, and more.
It’s been over a year since Oracle announced Unbreakable Linux. How is it going? Find out from Wim Coekertz- who runs the Linux show at Oracle.

What is all this about Linux and Cloud Computing? Meet companies running their business on Linux in the Amazon Cloud, talk to the architects behind IBM’s Blue Cloud, and more.

How can I support my companies’ device on Linux? Get hardware to the right developers, find out how to sign an NDA through the Linux Foundation, understand device driver backporting processes, gain insight into the economic advantage of supporting your device in the public kernel.

How do I partner with a Linux distribution vendor? Talk to reps from Red Hat, Novell, Ubuntu, Xandros, Asianux, Linspire, Red Flag, Miracle Linux and more.

This sounds to be an important event. I wonder how an individual such as myself gets an invitation?

I’m a system admin/network engineer who found himself moving from a Linux-centric ISP in the cold bleak north to a not-so-Linux-centric ASP in the sunny south. I literally make more use of virtualization and Linux at home than my current employer would ever consider.

A small (read: my friends are my clients) Linux consultancy keeps me sane. I find myself wanting the “Linux everywhere” culture I was accustomed to at my previous job. I’m hoping to flesh it out more, as Linux usage becomes more prevalent.

    Dear Jim:

I hope you can answer all my questions, here or my email. I cannot find the answers through any of the linux forms sites. I am a new computer owner. I purchased my first computer in 2001, a PC. For about five straight years I have experience continuous hackers. My recent IP is A T & T and most of the technicians felt that these hackers were not amateurs. Because of this continuos problem, I bought a Mac computer which I use to go onto the internet. Yes, I have had attempts on that too, bought caught them before any harm could be done. A T & T has a dynamic IP address system.

I recently had my “hacked into PC” and connected it to the internet. But before I went on to the internet I uninstalled my Windows XP with a piece of software and installed Linux/Ubuntu/Hardy Heron LTS. I went to their server and downloaded all their security updates. After I left the server I logged out of Ubuntu, closed down my computer and pulled the computer plug out of the surge protector.

The next day I went to the terminal of Linux (I am trying to learn Linux, so I am a “newbie to it”) and saw this command written on it “You do not have administrator rights…You do not have the right to make any changes to your computer..You will not be able to make any changes to your files….You will only have the right to read your files/computer.”

I also found out that this person came from a windows server. I always thought that Linux is based either from a Unix or Apache server! I also found out from some articles that you could have a trojan on your bios that would enable a hacker to find out your IP address and make changes into your computer. Is this correct? I also read that to purge this trojan you would have to take the cmos battery out for five minutes and reset your bios password. But I also came across some sites that said a hacker could bypass your bios password to get into your computer.

Please, tell me what I need to do to my computer to make sure that a hacker can’t get into my computer at every setting, that is starting at my computer then moving into the network settings and finally at the server settings.

I need to know all the necessary steps, terminal commands and linux programs that would enable my computer to become secure! What commands I can enter into the terminal BEFORE I connect to the internet that would prevent ANYONE from coming into my computer, that only I can have access to my computer! What commands I can enter into the terminal that would close any front door, back door, side door, or ports that hacker look for to gain access into a computer! Speaking of apt-get programs from the server… What firewall programs/Anti-Virus programs/Network Security programs and Server programs would you suggest that I download from the server to secure my computer! And HOW can I fix my computer that would enable my computer to be on a secure server/settings?

    Please answer all my questions!

    Sincerly,

    Dawn Wells
