+- The LF Names Markus Rex CTO +-
We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Markus Rex to CTO of the Linux Foundation. Markus will be on loan to the Linux Foundation from Novell. The “on loan” approach allows us to neutrally leverage talented personnel from the Linux ecosystem for the greater benefit of Linux Foundation members. At Novell, he has served as vice president and general manager for SUSE Linux, CTO for the Open Platform Solutions Group, and most recently as vice president of services strategy. He joined SUSE Linux AG in 1999, serving as head of development and later as vice president of research and development, where he oversaw SUSE’s growth from 15 engineers in 1999 to more than 200 in 2004. He will be leading the LF’s technical initiatives through the end of 2008.

+- First Ever Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit A Resounding Success +-
In June, The Linux Foundation held the first LF Collaboration Summit at Google’s Mountain View Campus. The event included more than 230 leaders from the Linux community, representing kernel developers, distribution and system vendors, ISVs, end users and community project leaders.
We couldn’t be more pleased with the results of the event. It was covered by newspapers and magazines throughout the world. You can read some of the results at http://linux-foundation.org/weblogs/press/2007/06/18/linux-foundation-announces-highlights-from-its-first-ever-collaboration-summit/
Also, keep checking linux-summit.org for results and plans for the next event, which will be held in the Spring next year. Apply early so you can guarantee a seat!

+- The LF Responds to Microsoft FUD in Businessweek +-
In case you missed it, the Linux Foundation wrote a strong editorial in BusinessWeek responding to Microsoft’s patent scare tactics. It was very well received and well quoted from, including achieving number one status on Digg for the day.

+- Improving Printing Functionality in Linux: Open Printing Results +-
The Linux Foundation harnesses the power of our members to solve key issues facing Linux. Printing on Linux is one of these issues. In June, the Linux Foundation announced the Linux Standard Base Driver Development Kit (LSB DDK) for print drivers.
We all know we have to make it extremely easy for printing manufacturers to target Linux. The DDK provides the tools and resources for printing manufacturers to easily support all Linux distributions with one driver package, greatly reducing the time and effort needed to support Linux. This release also streamlines printer support and functionality for end users through the addition of a web API from the OpenPrinting database.
This kit will reduce the effort it takes for them to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity Linux represents, and will help users “just print” while using the Linux desktop and printer of their choice. You can find out more of the resources for Linux printing users at http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting

+- Community Travel Fund Launches +-
Earlier this year, the Linux Foundation launched the LF Community Travel Fund. This project stems from the LF’s commitment to driving technical collaboration and support for the open source development community. It is vitally important for community developers to attend technical conferences to enable face-to-face collaboration. Many open source developers, however, do not have access to funds to pay for travel to attend these conferences. The LF travel fund will provide funding to community developers to attend technical conferences where meaningful technical collaboration and development takes place. Community developers can apply at

+- The Linux Foundation in the News +-
One of the most vital functions of the Linux Foundation is to serve as a neutral voice in the media, promoting Linux and fighting off FUD attacks from competitors. Since January, the Linux Foundation has generated over 800 articles, ranging from pieces in the New York Times and Fortune to articles in trade magazines like eWeek and InformationWeek. This coverage has been global in scope with articles in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Watch the LF web site for frequent updates or sign up for our news feed at : http://www.linux-foundation.org/weblogs/press/?feed=rss with the reader of your choice.
